OTT Is Not Just For Consumers! How Businesses Can Benefit

Wednesday, April 29, 2015

By Andy Asava on April 29, 2015

Entrepreneurs these days are smarter than ever. They’ve figured out how they can build a world class platform using apps, leveraging the cloud, and avoiding the complexity and cost associated with old school IT. The cloud makes everything lighter and easier.

Mobile makes everything more available, not only for the company and its team members, but for their customers too.

It’s time for businesses and enterprises of all sizes to understand and embrace the liberation of “OTT” – “Over-the-Top” web based, cloud real-time applications that are making building a business – or growing one – exponentially easier. With no heavy capex, and simple “opex” based business models, entrepreneurs can pay as they grow.

Before getting into the advantages of going Over the Top for Real-Time Communications (RTC) apps, let’s take a look at some really cool business apps that have already taken over the world. My premise? The “computing cloud” has been proven to scale and soar – now it’s time for the “communications cloud” to up the ante.

The Entrepreneur: From Vision and Strategy to Doing the Dishes

Entrepreneurs often have more responsibilities than CEOs and CIOs of large corporations because they don’t have teams of people to which they can delegate day to day operations.

Because necessity is the mother of invention, smart entrepreneurs are adopting “by the drop” solutions. Here are a few awesome examples:

Evernote Business

Evernote makes collaboration seamless and manageable for small business teams.

Square Register

Square saves time by tracking sales and inventory, managing teams, and viewing business analytics all from point of sale.

Asana enables business owners and their teams connect without email while viewing all tasks and conversations in one place, with Asana.
We use this in my company, GENBAND!

This app provides instant visibility into your business with inDinero’s real-time finance dashboard that connects to your bank and credit card accounts.

Box, which went public earlier this year (a great IPO) allows teams to view, edit, and share files securely in the cloud with the mobile app.

This mobile app is designed to help teams finish projects together while allowing for different roles, responsibilities, and objectives. We also use this app at GENBAND.

While all these apps are popular and awesome, we believe that the greatest value will be created when apps enable people to “simply connect.”

We’ve gotten a great response to our own Business Call app, powered by Kandy:

Business Call

The Business Call mobile app makes your Smart Phone even smarter. It installs in seconds and offers two distinct calling experiences; one for your personal calls and one for your business calls. You can receive and return your personal calls from your personal or business number.

We’re expert at OTT given that fring – a popular consumer application with over 55 million registered users – is now being rolled out by Communications Service Providers around the world.

M2 Australia’s “Dodo” App, powered by fring

We’re also expert at enabling other popular OTT applications, like Microsoft Lync (now “Skype for Business”) to work better. At Enterprise Connect last month we announced our Real-Time Communications (RTC) Client for Lync* to seamlessly combine real-time communications with Lync Instant Messaging (IM) and Presence.

The world of apps for business is rapidly evolving, and we are excited to be part of the “second wave” of Cloud – Real-Time Cloud Communications.
